Check-in lanes at the Scandlines ferry terminal in Puttgarden

By car, motorhome or motorbike

If you are travelling with a vehicle, you check in directly from it and follow the signs at the terminal.

  • Timing: pass through check-in no later than 15 minutes before departure; it opens two hours beforehand. Scandlines recommends arriving at the port at least 30 minutes before departure.
  • Lanes: the blue lane is self-service for passenger cars up to six metres long. The yellow lane is staffed and is for vehicles over six metres, trailers and caravans, motorbikes, bicycles, travellers with reduced mobility and anyone paying in cash or buying a ticket at the port.
  • Blue-lane process: if you entered your number plate when booking, a camera reads it automatically and you confirm the booking at the machine. Without a registered number plate, enter your booking number. The machine prints your ticket and any vouchers, the barrier opens and you drive into the assigned waiting lane. Number-plate recognition is available only for passenger cars and only on this route.
  • Yellow-lane process: a member of staff checks you in, prints your ticket and vouchers, and directs you to a waiting lane. Vehicles board when called, with the crew guiding you aboard.

Motorhomes and vehicles with trailers always use the yellow lane. The Motorhomes & caravans page explains how to enter the correct length and vehicle class before you travel.

By bicycle

Cyclists do not check in as foot passengers. Ride into the yellow lane at vehicle check-in at least 15 minutes before departure, where staff will process your ticket. You then roll aboard via the vehicle ramp, as the cars do, and follow the crew's instructions. A small bicycle supplement is charged in addition to the passenger ticket. The Foot passengers & bicycles page covers the full journey without a car.

On foot

Without a vehicle, use the port's terminal hall.

  • Timing: you must be at the ferry's boarding bridge no later than 15 minutes before departure. The walk from the terminal hall to the bridge takes five to ten minutes, so allow for it.
  • Boarding: scan your ticket at the entrance to the boarding bridge in the hall, go up the stairs and walk directly aboard. You can also buy a ticket at the terminal.

The Puttgarden ferry port and Rødby ferry port pages explain how to reach each terminal.

Travelling with reduced mobility

State what assistance you need when booking and use the staffed yellow lane at the port. If possible, arrive 30 minutes before departure so the crew can place your vehicle near the lift; the number of these spaces is limited.

Groups

Groups travelling on a group ticket check in at the gangway building. Scan the customer-service ticket at the machine, which prints an individual ticket for every group member. Each traveller then scans their ticket at the entrance to the boarding bridge and walks aboard; the 15-minute deadline at the bridge also applies to groups.

FAQ

When does check-in close?+

15 minutes before the scheduled departure, for both vehicles and foot passengers. Check-in opens two hours beforehand; Scandlines recommends allowing at least 30 minutes.

Blue or yellow lane?+

The blue lane is self-service for passenger cars up to six metres, using the number plate or booking number. The yellow lane is staffed and is the right choice for longer vehicles, vehicles with trailers, motorbikes, bicycles, travellers with reduced mobility, cash payments and tickets bought at the port.

Can I drive to the port without a booking?+

Yes, you can buy a ticket in the yellow lane if space is available. The port fare is considerably higher than the online fare, however; see Prices & fares.

Which documents do I need?+

Your booking confirmation and valid identification for every traveller. The route crosses an internal EU border, so spot checks are possible.

What happens if I miss the ferry?+

With a Standard or Flex ticket, you can simply take the next departure; both are valid for the whole travel day. A Low Price ticket is tied to the booked departure, so speak to staff in the yellow lane if this happens.

How does check-in work with a bicycle?+

Use the yellow lane at vehicle check-in at least 15 minutes before departure. You roll aboard via the vehicle ramp, just like the cars, and the crew will direct you. Find out more on the Foot passengers & bicycles page.
