Booking a motorhome or caravan correctly
The Vogelfluglinie is the standard route for motorhome travellers heading towards Denmark and Sweden: a 45-minute crossing instead of the overland journey through Jutland, with a daytime departure every 30 minutes. Motorhomes, campervans and vehicles with caravans can use every departure. According to the operator's vessel specifications, the ferries can also carry oversized vehicles up to around 25 metres long and 4.70 metres high. The essential point is to enter your vehicle details correctly when booking.
Which vehicle category applies?
Tickets are sold per vehicle, with all occupants included. The fare is based on the total length:
- Campervans and vans up to 6 metres are booked like passenger cars and use the blue lane at the port.
- Motorhomes over 6 metres and cars towing caravans must be booked using their actual total length; they use the staffed yellow lane at the port.
- Roof boxes increase the vehicle's height, while rear-mounted racks and drawbars count towards its length. Include both in the booking details.

How much does the crossing cost?
There is no fixed flat fare for motorhomes. The price depends on the vehicle length, ticket type (Low Price, Standard or Flex), demand and when you book. The dated starting fares for passenger cars on the Prices & fares page provide a guide, but only the booking flow can show the exact amount for your vehicle. The route's general rules also apply here: online is considerably cheaper than at the port, and booking early is cheaper than booking late.
How to measure correctly
Measure from the furthest point at the front to the furthest point at the rear, including a bicycle rack fitted to the tow bar, rear-mounted racks, ladders and spare wheels. For a car and caravan, measure from the front bumper of the towing vehicle to the rear of the caravan, including the drawbar. If in doubt, round up. An understated length will be noticed in the check-in lane and may lead to an additional payment at the port fare; Scandlines' conditions of carriage are definitive.
Check-in and vehicle lane
Motorhomes over six metres and vehicles towing caravans always use the yellow lane at check-in. A member of staff checks the booking and directs you to a waiting lane. Check-in closes 15 minutes before departure and opens two hours beforehand. With a larger vehicle, allowing 30 to 45 minutes is the more relaxed choice, especially during holiday periods.
Before leaving the vehicle deck, secure your vehicle. Switch off the refrigerator and heating and turn off the gas bottles for the crossing; the operator's conditions of carriage are definitive here too. The deck remains closed during the 45-minute crossing, so take everything you need upstairs.
On board and arrival
Upstairs you will find the Food Express, Scandlines Coffee and the onboard shop, which is sufficient for the short journey. At Rødbyhavn you drive directly onto the E47. Copenhagen is around two hours away, while motorhome pitches and campsites on Lolland and Falster lie directly along the route.
Continuing to Sweden
For motorhome travellers heading to Sweden, Scandlines combines the ferry with either the Øresund Bridge or the Helsingør–Helsingborg crossing in a single booking. Dated starting fares for the combination tickets are listed on the Prices & fares page.
FAQ
Do I need to book the caravan separately?+
No. Book the car and caravan as one vehicle using its total length, measured from the front bumper of the towing vehicle to the rear of the caravan, including the drawbar.
Does the bicycle rack count towards the length?+
Yes. The total length includes everything that projects beyond the vehicle, including bicycle racks, rear storage boxes and the drawbar. If in doubt, enter the next length category up.
Can I arrive at the port without booking?+
Yes, you can buy a ticket in the staffed yellow lane if space is available. The crossing is considerably cheaper online, however; see Prices & fares.
What happens if I miss my booked ferry?+
With a Standard or Flex ticket, you can take the next departure; both are valid for the whole travel day. Only the Low Price ticket is tied to the booked crossing.
Can my dog stay in the motorhome?+
